A First Look at MTG’s Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate
A First Look at MTG’s Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate
After Magic: The Gathering’s first set of Dungeons & Dragons-themed cards became one of Wizards of the Coast’s best-selling summer releases of all time - this June will see the return of everyone’s favourite crossover.
The newest addition, ‘Battle for Baldur’s Gate’, takes place in Forgotten Realms, and will transport players directly to one of the most popular cities in Dungeons & Dragons. The game is anticipated to take the multiplayer experience to the next level, encompassing both the social fun of MTG and the exciting power of D&D.
Whether you're a Magic master ready to draft and play with friends again, or a D&D fan ready to explore a new multiplayer game - Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate will offer immersive and unique gameplay for everyone involved.
About Battle for Baldur’s Gate
Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate is the second Magic: The Gathering Commander set that is designed to be drafted. While draft is one of the main focuses of this set, you can also play sealed.
Building on Commander Legends - which proved wildly popular in 2020 - Battle for Baldur's Gate will bring in new mechanics, iconic characters, more spells from D&D, and Commander Legends-style foil-etched legendary creatures. The set will contain 361 regular cards and include randomly inserted premium versions of all cards.
It will be officially released on 10th June 2022, but fans will have the option to preorder prior to this date.
In the build-up to this release date, Wizards of the Coast will host a public debut for Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate online on 16th May. Preview cards will appear at multiple outlets from that date through to 20th May, with Commander deck previews running between 23rd-26th May. The pre-release weekend will be hosted in stores from 3rd-6th June. The D&D/MTG crossover set will also be available and draftable on Magic Online.
Commander Legends Drafting Rules
With Commander Legends, the rules are a little different. Commander Legends draft uses three draft boosters per player. For every pick, players take two cards at a time. This is to ensure consistency of decks, as players will need to stick with the colour identities of their eventual Commanders. After the draft, players build a 60-card deck.
All other Commander rules apply apart from one exception: the Singleton rule does not apply (where your deck can only contain a maximum of one copy of any card except basic land). You may play as many copies of a card as you draft of it. Though given the set size compared to how many cards players get, it's not very likely to get more than one copy of a card. Players may always use one or more of The Prismatic Pipers (a shapeshifter of pure mana) as a Commander, even if they didn't draft one.
